  • JFS is Committed to Providing Outstanding Service to ALL of New Mexico's Seniors

Jewish Family Service of New Mexico is proud to announce that the entire staff will receive cultural competency and inclusive service training. In addition, the agency as a whole is committed to being an affirming service provider addressing the needs of all Senior Citizens in New Mexico, including those specific to LGBT Seniors. We hope to lead and support other agencies and organizations in this important endeavor.

  • LGBT Elders Face Unique Challenges

How important is this issue to New Mexico? Based on 2000 census data the Movement Advancement Project estimates the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender population of New Mexico to include 68,411 individuals. A recent needs assessment report found 19% of LGBT New Mexican respondents were 60 or older.

  • Here are a few of the challenges LGBT Elders can face:

    - Discrimination from service providers and long term care facilities

    - Higher health disparities

    - Isolation

    - Poverty and other financial difficulty due to long standing discrimination, including discrimination by the Federal Government. Government discrimination, like the Defense of Marriage Act, affects Medicare and Social Security benefits for LGBT Elders and their families.

  • Aging Care and Service Provider Trainings Are Now Available in New Mexico

JFS fully supports our partner, The Senior Citizen's Law Office, and its Executive Director, Lisa Schatz-Vance in providing training on cultural sensitivity and service needs for LGBT Elders.

Lisa is the LGBT National Resource Center certified trainer for the State of New Mexico.
