Albuquerque Grief & Loss Coalition Upcoming Events

In recognition of National Hospice & Palliative Care Month, two community events are available to learn about this compassionate care for the dying. The events are intended for community members that want to learn more about the hospice philosophy. Hospice care provides support to individuals who are approaching death with care from a team of professionals and volunteers in ways that offer compassion, dignity, and pain management to support a peaceful dying process.
The Albuquerque Grief & Loss (AG&L) Coalition is spearheading both events. The AG&L Coalition is a diverse group of professionals that provide support to individuals who have experienced death or other losses. Professionals may be case managers, bereavement coordinators, counselors in private practice, social workers, chaplains, mortuary services staff, and/or those that represent agencies that provide diverse support to the community. We recognize that it can be challenging to discuss death and dying in our society and culture. The AG&L Coalition wants to share information that allows individuals and families opportunities to be knowledgeable about the hospice option. We can offer clear answers to your questions and resources for additional, ongoing support.
“Life in Hospice” is a community educational event to be held on Thursday, November 12, 2009, 1:30-4:00 pm at the Jewish Community Center, 5520 Wyoming Blvd NE. This event is free to the public and is ideal for adults of all ages to obtain information about the hospice team approach to providing physical, emotional, mental, spiritual and social support for the dying, as well as support for family members and caregivers. A panel discussion to introduce the diversity of the hospice team (doctor, nurse, home health aide, social services, spiritual care, bereavement, volunteers) will shine light on the scope of compassionate care available through hospice. There will be “Education Stations” that will provide information and resources related to: Care for the Caregiver, Stress Management, Expressive Therapy, Selecting a Hospice, Eligibility for Hospice, and Making Your Wishes Known Through Advanced Care Directives.
On Sunday, November 15, 2009, 1-3 pm, the Guild Cinema will feature the movie “Solace: Wisdom of the Dying,” followed by a “Question & Answer” period facilitated by the AG&L Coalition. A donation of $5 per attendee is suggested. The Guild Cinema is located at 3405 Central NE, Albuquerque, NM (505-255-1848). The documentary is directed by New Mexico hospice nurse Camille Adair and offers a rich blend of perspectives from professionals who provide hospice care, and most significantly, the practical and authentic wisdom from people facing their mortality.
